Sheridan Elementary has two experienced teachers, Michelle Strecker and Donna Yu, at the 5th and 6th grade level. Donna Yu will be teaching a combined 5th/6th grade classroom this year, while Michelle Strecker will have a 5th grade class.
Expectations:
By the end of fifth grade, your child will be able to:
- Read 25 books for pleasure and information - Compare and contrast information read - Think about why an author writes a story or article - Understand ideas that are implied but not said. - Recognize figurative language, such as "I have a frog in my throat" - Find information in almanacs, maps, atlases, field guides and audio/visual materials. - Use a variety of sentence structures in papers with multiple paragraphs. - Write effectively to make a point, persuade, give direction and/or for various audiences. - Take notes, outline ideas and write an essay stating an opinion and giving supporting details. - Prepare and give presentations. - Write a dialogue between characters using quotation marks and other punctuation. - Plan, draft, revise, edit and publish for a specific audience. - Collect, record and analyze information in bar, line and circle graphs. - Change decimals to fractions and fractions to decimals. - Measure and create angles using a compass or a protractor. - Work on math problems that may take a few days to solve. - Read and order numbers to one billion - Add, subtract, multiply, and divide four-digit numbers by three-digit numbers - Understand radius and diameter of circles, find the perimeter of various shapes.
