EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
If a child is injured or becomes ill during school hours, the school nurse or other school personnel will attempt to reach the parents at home or work. The parents will be requested to pick up their child. If the parent/guardian cannot be reached, the emergency number listed on your emergency card will be called. If no help is found and the child appears seriously injured, he/she will be taken to Ramsey Hospital by the paramedics.
IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT AN EMERGENCY NUMBER BE RECORDED IN THE OFFICE RECORDS FOR EVERY STUDENT ATTENDING SHERIDAN SCHOOL!
It is critical that any changes of address, telephone number or place of employment of the parents be reported to the office and the teacher as soon as possible.
LEAVEING SCHOOL DURING SCHOOL HOURS
If you child needs to leave school during the school day for any reason, written permission signed by the guardian should be sent to school with your child. Please inform the school if someone other than yourself will be picking up your child from school.
If an emergency arises and you need to pick your child up, please come to the office and we will ask the classroom teacher to send your child to the office. In either situation, parents are to sign their children out in the office register.
TELEPHONE CALLS
When telephoning your child’s teacher to discuss progress, please try to arrange times before or after the school day, or leave a message for the teacher to return your cal during non-instructional time. Every effort is made not to interrupt the teacher and learning progress of the classroom.
Student use of building telephones
Students need permission from a classroom teacher or an office staff person to use any phone in the building.
VISITORS
All visitors must first report to the office upon entering Sheridan School to receive a visitor’s pass and sign in the guest register. This includes parents, other school district personnel, and student from other schools.
ATTENDANCE
It is school policy that children bring a written excuse upon returning to school after an absence. Good attendance is vital for student success in school. If your child will be absent from school due to personal illness, for medical or dental attention, or some emergency, please call the school and/or send a written excuse. Attendance is monitored closely. The home school liaison will call your home if your child is absent and you have not telephones to inform the office.
APPROPRIATE SCHOOL CLOTHING
Children should be dressed according to the weather conditions. All children are required to wear tennis shoes during their physical education period in the gymnasium. Please provide a pair for your child so that he/she will be able to participate in these activities. Hats are permitted to be worn before and after school and during recess but are not allowed to be worn in school. It is the St. Paul School District Policy to have zero tolerance for any clothing or items that suggest gang connections. Please be advised that clothing that the Principal and teachers see as inappropriate or offensive to others will not be allowed.
FIELD TRIPS
At the beginning of the school year, parents are asked to sign a form authorizing participating in walking field trips as well as field drips that require bussing. When your child’s class is going on a field trip, the classroom teacher will communicate that information in a classroom newsletter.
MEDIA/PHOTO RELEASE FORMS
Throughout the year, photos of students will be taken at school activities and/or engaged in learning activities. Sometimes a photo may be release to the media or place on a website. If you do not want to have any photo of your child published, please indicate that preference on the media release form given to you in September.
INSURANCE
The St. Paul Public School District does not provide any type of health, dental, or accident insurance for injuries incurred by your student at school.
RECESS/PLAYGROUND
All children are expected to go outside for recess with their classrooms. Exceptions to this rule can be made only for chronic health reasons or teacher discretion. A written request from parents or a doctor’s note will be needed in order for a child to be excused. To help insure the safety of student on the playground, skateboards, rollerblades, and hard baseballs are not permitted. Also, no food is allowed on the playground.
FOOD SERVICES
Breakfast will be free for everyone and served from 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. Each student is responsible for going to breakfast on their own before the start of the school day. A four digit PIN# (Personal Information Number) will be assigned to each student. This number must be memorized and punched into the lunch computer for those purchasing lunch.
When you are purchasing lunches and milk, please send your money to school in an envelope labeled with your child’s name, room number and PIN#. Please make checks out to St. Paul Food Service. Free and reduced rates are offered; however, an application must be completed and approved before this service can begin. Applications are available in the office. It is important for eligible families to fill out the free and reduced lunch application and list all household members (including those that do not attend Sheridan Elementary School but are members of your household). The information gathered from these applications is used for statistical purposes and in qualifying the school for Title I Federal funding. It takes about a week before an application can be processed, so please send money or a bag lunch until you are notified that your application has been approved.
Students may bring a bag lunch to eat in the cafeteria, or buy his/her lunch in the cafeteria. Gum, cans of pop, or glass containers may not be brought to the cafeteria.
